In a related corporate move the n&w had recently gained its independence when the pennsylvania railroad was forced to divest its holdings due to the impending merger. With the discovery of coal in western virginia during the 1880s and subsequent new lines built into the rich southern coal field of west virginia the n&w became enormously wealthy. The norfolk and western railway (reporting mark nw), commonly called the n&w, was a us class i railroad, formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982.
